Assignment: Write a double-spaced essay in which you argue a point regarding cancel culture using one of the prompts below. I chose these to get you started and to help guide you toward a clear argument and thesis. If you want to choose another aspect of cancel culture or to modify one of these prompts, you can, but message me and let us talk about it. Refer to at least three (3) outside sources in this essay, quoting, paraphrasing, and/or summarizing the material appropriately and citing it in MLA format. I will link you to a section in the Opposing Viewpoints database and to a topic guide on a site called Educators 4 Social Change that has a list of articles. I haven’t read every one of these, but most look to me like good sources for this kind of essay. Format: • The essay should follow MLA style in both manuscript formatting and in citation formatting (see the sample paper in Course Resources). • Essay should be typed, double spaced, with no extra spaces between heading, title, and body, or between paragraphs • Essay should be 12-point font, preferably in Times New Roman or Arial • Essay should have one-inch margins at top, bottom, and both sides • Essay should contain internal (parenthetical) citations and a works cited page at the end of the essay. Prompts: • What types of actions or statements, if any, do you think should qualify someone for being “canceled” on social media? Explain your answer. • Do you think cancel culture campaigns that target someone for controversial actions or comments from many years in the past are fair? Why or why not? • In your opinion, does “canceling” people help or harm efforts to make American society more responsive to social justice issues such as racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia? Explain your answer YOU SELECT ONE OF THE THREE PROMPTS ABOVE TO WRITE ABOUT AND IT NEEDS TO HAVE THREE WORKS CITED ON A SEPERATE FOURTH PAGE ( WORKS CITED PAGE)
