Peacock, Soul Care in African American Practice, Introduction and Chapters 8-10 and Conclusion
Calhoun, Spiritual Disciplines Handbook, Part 7 and Appendix 1, Appendix 10
NOTE: Calhoun’s book is formatted a bit differently than the other textbooks in this course. It reads more like an encyclopedia of spiritual disciplines. It’s rare for someone to pick up an encyclopedia and enjoy reading it cover to cover, so I would suggest that you approach this a bit differently. As you read, treat each part (e.g., Part 1 – Worship) as a chapter and read it as a unit. Then pause after reading each part to reflect on that category of spiritual disciplines. In other words, for Calhoun’s book, you do not need to list each chapter individually but may organize it around the larger parts. This will save you significant time. Peacock’s book is written in a manner similar to our previous textbooks. You may format your response to her book as you’ve done with the others.
