Write a discussion paper on Restoration History.W‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌hile the subject matter for this class is “restoration history,” I had hoped that this class would be far more than an exercise in history. I wanted this class to help you answer the question, “How, then, should I live?” And if you are called into ministry, I wanted this class to help you become a better minister so that you can help others with that very same question, “How, then, should I live?” To achieve those objectives, I divided the course into three segments: 1. We began our class by looking in-depth at the history of the White Churches of Christ. 2. We then took a detour from “restoration history” to help us think even more deeply about the question, “How, then, should we live?” As part of that detour, we read and discussed the following: • A chapter from the booklet, Lipscomb University and the Upside-down Kingdom of God—a chapter that explores what the Bible means when it uses the phrase, “the kingdom of God.” • Key chapters from Adam Russell Taylor’s A More Perfect Union: A New Vision for Building the Beloved Community • Sections from Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste 3. We completed this course by returning to “restoration history,” but this time by exploring the history of Black Churches of Christ, why and how the White churches segregated them in the first place, and why and how they finally rejected segregation and opted for separation instead. The text for that final unit was Wes Crawford’s Shattering the Illusion: How African American Churches of Christ moved from Segregation to Independence. Through all of this material, I wanted the question, “How, then, should we live?” to be front and center, but always with reference to racial equity and racial healing, simply because how we treat our ‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌neighbor stands at the heart of the gospel message. Your assignment for this project, then, has five components. 1. In a single essay, trace the biblical narrative that places the upside-down kingdom of God at the center of both the Old and New Testaments. 2. In another essay, explain how that biblical narrative informed the work of the following leaders in Churches of Christ: Barton Stone James A. Harding David Lipscomb R. H. Boll E. H. Ijams and the Central Church of Christ in Nashville 3. In a third essay, explore what you have learned in this class, especially from Adam Taylor and Isabel Wilkerson, about racial injustice and inequities in both Christian and American history. 4. In a fourth essay, explore how and why the caste system that had defined American culture for so many years also came to define Churches of Christ. (1) For the question of why, ask how the way Churches of Christ read the biblical text permitted them to absorb the racial biases so central to the surrounding culture. To answer this question adequately, you must also explore why Churches of Christ read the Bible as they did (2) For the question of how, give examples of how the caste system functioned in Churches of Christ. 5. In a fifth and final essay, explore in depth how the Bible offers theological resources that can equip Christians—and Christian ministers—to resist racial injustice and work on behalf of the upside-down kingdom of God. ONLY USE RESOURCES FROM THESE THREE BOOKS • A chapter from the booklet, Lipscomb University and the Upside-down Kingdom of God—a chapter that explores what the Bible means when it uses the phrase, “the kingdom of God.” Third chapter • Key chapters from Adam Russell Taylor’s A More Perfect Union: A New Vision‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌ for Building the Beloved Community • Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste
