Franklin Lumber Company Case Study

Words: 930
Pages: 4

INTRODUCTION

For
our class Project, this will be one last writing assignment for you.
This is a case study in which you will be asked to put on your critical
thinking caps and really apply yourself here. Attached below is a file
that lays out a case study involving the Franklin Lumber Company. You
will see in reviewing the file that there is not a lot to it. However,
it does present some clear cut issues. Your task is to apply your best
critical thinking skills to this and to write a paper that thoroughly
provides the following….

Presents the background of the case
Presents the issue(s) involved in this case
Discusses the questions delineated below
States your position(s) on the issue(s)
Provides your conclusion(s) to the issue(s)

Make
sure when you are working on your submission to reference back to
material we covered this semester. After all, this is a question of
ethics, and this is the Ethics in Accounting class.
Listed below are the questions to make sure and address in your
submission. They should be part of your discussion, not simply listed
off with answers added to them.

Put
yourself in Shirley’s shoes…If you are right that the accounting
entries should be made, what would be most important to you in deciding
what to do in this case?
What would you do and why?
How
would the company’s leadership and culture present a challenge? If you
are going to blow the whistle, as a CPA, what type of obligations and
provisions does she need to be aware?
Please reference Exhibit 3.11 from your textbook, Ethical Responsibilities of CPAs to Avoid Subordination of Judgement. (It is also included below.)
Make sure you properly explain the chain of command

Be sure to discuss these in your submission. Remember – THIS IS NOT A SHORT ANSWER EXERCISE! (Sorry for shouting, just wanted to get your attention.)

I
have included in the Helpful Links, some links on Critical Thinking as
well as why it is important for accounting persons to have such a
skill. You may find them interesting to review. And more importantly, I
have added links for resources specific to the Project for your use as
well. I would urge you to review the Rubric before starting so that you
have a good understanding of what I will be looking for when I grade
these (more about it below).

This assignment is due on May 9th by 11:59pm. Please note that as final grades are due the next day, there will be NO extensions for this assignment. I suggest you get to work on it early.

DOCUMENT

For this PROJECT, please make sure to use the following guidelines for your submission.

(Microsoft) Word doc files only…if it is not saved in .doc file format, I will not grade it.
Save the file as EthicsProject-lastname (using your last name).
When completed make sure to save the document and then upload using the title link below.
Document itself should be…

12 point font
Either…Arial or Times New Roman
Margins should be no bigger than .75 of an inch
Make sure to include citations for any borrowed or referenced work.
I implore you to
take full advantage of the spell/grammar check in Word. Refer to
Grammar and Spelling section of the rubric. It will not take much to go
down one letter grade for spelling/grammar issues.

For
this assignment I have not included a minimum word count. I however
figure that 2 to 3 pages should sufficiently allow for you to provide
the necessary writing. If your submission is only 1 page in length, it
had better be a very concise work in order to include everything
necessary to maximize your grade potential for this assignment.

RUBRIC

The rubric for this assignment is as follows…

Explanation of the Issue(s) – 20 points
Examination of Case Evidence and Resources – 20 points
Student’s Position – 20 points
Conclusion and related outcomes – 20 points
Organization – 10 points
Grammar and Spelling – 10 points

Again,
to reiterate, I do not have minimum word count for this assignment.
However, I feel confident in saying that I have not yet seen a one page
(or less) submission that accurately and completely discussed the
issue(s) of this case.

Lastly, to maximize your grade potential, make sure:

All requirements for this assignment were met:

Submission addresses all issue(s) in the case.
Submission covers all the points in noted in the Introduction section, including the questions.
Submission is your original work.
In
presenting your writings on this case study, make sure to treat this as
you are presenting to someone who is not familiar with the situation
(Points 1 & 2 in the Introduction specifically).
Correct grammar and spelling and complete sentences are used.
Be sure to provide citations for any “borrowed” work.
All work is completed by the assignment deadline. (As final grades will be due the next day, there are no extensions.)
Work is submitted as a Word doc file.
