The final paper should be between 12 and 15 pages long, not including title page and bibliography. It should be double-spaced, size 12 font, with 1″ margins. The format (MLA, Chicago, APSA, etc.) is less important than the consistency of the application of the format you choose.
All relevant course readings should be included in the appropriate sections of your analysis — failure to do so will result in an automatic F grade for the paper.
The paper should be subdivided into four sections, preceded by an introduction, and followed by a conclusion.:
Section one (mirrors short-paper assignment #1, pt. 1): descriptive data demonstrating multiple inequalities/hierarchies (“social cleavages”) in your case-country.
Section two (mirrors short-paper assignment #1, pt. 2): evidence that certain inequalities/hierarchies/cleavages “constitute actual ‘lines’ of political conflict in your case-country.”
Section three (mirrors short-paper assignments #2 & #3): a brief literature review of at least two academic articles and any course readings that attempt to explain (hypothesize/theorize causation) the existing inequalities/hierarchies/cleavages in your case-country that you have chosen to focus on.
Section four: a description and non-normative analysis of one or more instances of ‘fighting back’ against the inequalities/hierarchies/cleavages that you have chosen to focus on.
Previous Paper Topics:
Paper 1: What are the measurable social hierarchies in your case study country? (minimum: class, ethnicity, religion, gender? Is there evidence in contemporary times that these hierarchies constitute actual ‘lines’ of political conflict? (for this, you will need to research and uncover contemporary political conflicts)
Paper 2: Find and summarize a peer-reviewed academic treatment (article or book chapter) of one or more contemporary hierarchies in your country case (or region)
