Andrea is a 15 month old who comes from an upper-middle class professional family. Both of her parents have successful professions and work full time, so Andrea is in full-time child care. Through observations by Allen, her primary caregiver, led him to conclude that Andrea has average to above average overall development but is weak in the development of self-interest. Allen hypothesizes that this may be because 1) a new c-teacher just joined the classroom and he was actually in charge of the entire group of children or 2) her parents are very busy and Andrea must seek their attention.
Andrea seems anxious and seems to need the attention and approval of other people frequently in order to feel secure and happy. When Allen pays attention to other children, Andrea appears to get upset, withdrawing and crying.
Allen established a plan to help Andrea share attention and enjoy time by herself. First the strategy of labeling her feelings was used to assist her with identifying her feelings and her need to be close to others. He also gave her attractive choices of favorite experiences to engage in alone. Second, the co-teachers divided the work more equitably as the new teacher was ready to assume her role as a primary caregiver.
Third, a meeting was held with Andreas parents to see if a special time could be established each day with each of them. Her parents did not realize how their busy work lives may be spilling over in the home and the potential consequences to Andrea. They worked together to create a new evening routine. Within a short time, Andrea was able to spend time by herself enjoyable and share the attention of Allen.
