Please summarize and critically engage with the main ideas of Mary Weismantel’s article, “Moche Sex Pots: Reproduction and Sexuality in Ancient South America.”
In addition to the reading guide for this article, which should alert you to what I think are some of the most important components of her interpretation, follow the guidelines listed below:
1. In the introduction to your essay, give the reader a general sense of the culture and the pots, and as your thesis, summarize Weismantel’s overall interpretation.
2. Then, in each body paragraph of your essay, summarize one piece of “evidence” Wesimantel uses to build her argument. Also, please critically engage with her argument by offering your thorough assessment of why you find her either convincing or not.
3. Conclude with an overall assessment of her argument, and any ideas you may have about alternative interpretations or other avenues of further research.
Format: 2-3 pages, 12pt font, 1″ margins. You may use any “voice” you want (scholarly, informal, etc). Upload as a Word .doc or PDF file.
