Create a design estimate for a Frozen Food Company in New JerseyYour group is required to prepare a design estimate for our
new customer, Acme Frozen Foods, Inc. Acme is developing a new complex that
will have eighteen 300,000 ft³ refrigerated units (200 ft x 100 ft
x 15 ft), each requiring 200 tons of refrigeration at a level of 0°F, located in Newark, NJ. You must select the most desirable
refrigerant, determine the appropriate refrigeration cycle, and prepare a
preliminary cost estimate, exclusive of the evaporation coils in the warehouse.
The latter will be handled by another group.
The number of refrigerants is rather lengthy, and includes paraffin
and olefin hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, and others. To assist in future
projects, it may be helpful to prepare a table of potential refrigerants and
their relevant characteristics, including cost. It is, of course, necessary to
include safety and environmental concerns, as well as cost, in the final
selection of the refrigerant and the cycle.
The cooling tower design temperature is 85°F, with a maximum water return temperature of 135°F.
