The structure of your paper is important and different topics may require different structures. In this section, we will present a common linear structure that you can use. If you feel that an alternative structure is more suitable to your research topic and findings, then please check and validate that with your supervisor. When writing and structuring your paper, remember what you have learned in your prevsious classes, such as Academic Research and Writing and Business and Professional Writing. A traditionally structured research paper generally contains the following sections: 1.Abstract 2.Introduction 3.Literature Review 4.Method 5.Findings/Results 6.Discussion/Analysis 7.Conclusions 8.References 9.Appendices Abstract The purpose of an abstract is to provide a concise overview of your whole paper. You should be familiar with abstracts from reading academic articles. It is also similar to an executive summary, which you should be familiar with from your business report writing in Business and Professional Writing. An abstract should not be too long (approximately 300 words). According to Saunders, Thornhill and Lewis (2020), it can be organized into four paragraphs and should address the following questions: ″1. What were my research questions and why were they important? 2. How did I go about answering the research questions? 3. What did I find out in response to my research questions? 4. What conclusions do I draw regarding my research questions?″ While you should draft your abstract at the beginning of the writing process, to set the storyline or theme for your paper, it should be edited and finalized at the end, when your full report has been written. Introduction The purpose of the introduction is to clarify the purpose and context of your research. With that in mind, you should include the following: •Your research question(s) •The purpose of your research – what do you hope to achieve? •Details about the context of your research – if it is focused on a specific sector or organization, provide sufficient details for your reader to familiarize themself with the setting. Your introduction should also include the road map. This should be familiar to you from Academic Research and Writing I, but remember that in academic writing, your reader should have a clear understanding of how the paper will be developed from reading the introduction. Literature Review As part of Capstone I, you submitted a 3,000-word literature review, so this part of the paper should be almost complete. That being said, as your research project has progressed, you have most likely read additional papers and therefore you will need to update your literature before submitting your final paper. Method This is an extremely important part of your final paper, and it should be sufficiently detailed and transparent for your reader to fully understand how you carried out your research, and therefore the reliability, validity and trustworthiness of your results and findings. When you were designing your research, you made many decisions about how to collect your data (your sample size and method, what type of data was required to answer your research question, how to gather that data), so you can refer back to that decision-making process here so that your reader understands the research process. Your research methods section should include the following: •research setting (why it was chosen, why it is suitable to answer your research question, the timing and context in which you conducted your research in this setting) •sampling methods (which sampling methods you chose and why) •data collection (how did you collect your data and why this method was chosen, any issues that were encountered and how they were resolved) •data analysis (how the data was analyzed, how you resolved any issues in the data analysis, and how you ensured the correct procedures were used to ensure your data analysis is objective) •reliability and validity (your assessment of the reliability and validity of your research methods) •ethical considerations (how you addressed any potential ethical issues in your research methods) Findings/Results This part of your research paper presents the results or findings of your research. How you present this will depend on whether you collected quantitative or qualitative data. You can refer back to the sections in the Capstone I module for further information about how to analyze your data. Presenting quantitative data should include some key tables and graphs to illustrate your findings. Presenting qualitative data should include some key quotes from your findings. This section should be fairly straightforward, but where students often encounter difficulties is in ensuring that they separate the research findings from the discussion. According to Saunders, Thornhill and Lewis (2020), one way to help separate these two sections is to create a table with two columns. The first column should present your findings: ″what I found out″. The second should present your discussion of the findings: ″what judgements I have formed on the basis of what I found out″. In addition to helping you separate these two aspects of your paper, this table will also help you see the overview of your findings, and therefore help you organize the findings into a clear and logical structure. Discussion If you have already organized your findings into a table of findings and discussion, the content of your discussion section is already clear. However, this section is possibly the most important one of your paper, so it needs to be well-thought through. Your discussion is your chance to demonstrate the purpose and meaning of your research.
