1.Candida is a 21* century country with a government much like that of the USA.
Recently a law has been passed which allows both corporations and individuals to
make completely unrestricted and anonymous contributions to political campaigns.
Supporters attempt to legitimize these contributions as 1$ Amendment (free
speech) rights. There has been much discussion and dispute about the effect of
these contributions. For example, the Kook brothers (oil billionaires) have been
pumping millions of dollars into upcoming elections in an attempt to influence
the balance of the Senate. The law has worked its way up to the Supreme Court, the
highest court of Candida. The two opposing counsels who will argue the matter
before the court are Perikles and Cicero. Discuss their arguments. Decide the case
and discuss the reasoning if it were being considered in Athens in 442 BCE. Decide
the case and discuss the reasoning if it were being considered in Rome in 63 BCE.
2. Students for Democratic Society (SDS) is an American organization of college-
aged students concerned about what they see as a deterioration of the legal and
political climate in the US. They have commissioned a study by two preeminent
commentators and plan to release the findings to the nation via the news media.
The two commentators are Paul Woodruff and Sophokles. Produce their report.
3. The nexus of myth-religion, politics, and law is well attested. What in your sources’ view are the problems with myth-religion today; how are these problems remediable; and in what ways might religion present an avenue to argue that outlawing abortion violates the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution
4.Numerous commentators have suggested that the Constitution of the United States
is undemocratic and that the government of the US from a legal perspective is
becoming more exclusive and is growing farther from democratic ideals each year.
Assess the criticisms of the Constitution in light of the claims of the commentators
and make recommendations that would bring the Constitution more into line with
the ideals of democracy. Discuss any possible dangers inherent in the attempted remedies.
