Words: 331

Subject: Uncategorized

Have you noticed any case of disruptive online behavior? Please refer
to lecture 3 of this module for different types of disruptive online
behavior. Please describe what kind of disruptive or damaging behavior
you have witnessed. Please then concentrate on the problem of
cyberbullying and compare cyberbullying with bullying in face-to-face
environment. What do you think should be done towards the online
disruptive or damaging behavior? Do you think the online community
should censor or take actions to stop the described disruptive
behaviors? Do you think legislature and law enforcement should be
engaged? If so, what do you want your legislators to pass as laws? If
not, why? Please give some concrete examples.

Part 2. (200 words paper or 100 words e-presentation)

Please find and cite one article on the use of face-recognition
technology. Should the face-recognition technology be widely used to
replace other forms of personal identification such ID cards issued by
governmental agencies? Please support your views with detailed
explanation.

Part 3. (700 words for both formats)

All the three questions need to be completed.

1. Governmental Power with CMC

You have probably learned by now that governmental agencies can
summon the Internet provider or search engine provider or a tech firm to
submit its customer data. You probably have learned from Snowden’s
exposure that governmental agencies spy their own citizens – you may
want to watch the documentary Citizenfour. You may be interested
in this article by Vindu Goel and Charlie Savage titled “Threat of
Daily Fine Shows Government’s Aggressive Push for Data” in New York Times (print, B1 Friday September 2014, and online www.nytimes.com/2014/…/12/…/documents-unsealed-in-yahoos.) You may have read about “iPhone Change to Block Police” (Robert McMillan, Wall Street Journal, June 14, 2018, Thursday, B1) or “Court Ruling Boosts Phone Privacy” (Jess Bravin and Bret Kendall, Wall Street Journal, June
23/24, Sat/Sun, A1). In your opinion, should it be legal or illegal
for the government to do so and why or why not? Please explain your
points details and development your argument with research references.

2. Corporate Power with CMC
Companies
and organizations collect data of their customers. Such data can be
traded for profits. (For example, you probably have heard Facebook.com
has sold its customer data to various agencies and companies.) Such
data can also be hacked and the perpetrators then sell them for profits
and other gains. Please cite some research on this topic. Should
companies and organizations be allowed to sell the data? Should
companies and organizations be responsible when their collected data is
hacked? If yes, why and if no, why? You may take a look at the article
titled “Businesses Criticize California ‘s New Data-Privacy Law” (Marc
Vartabedian, George Wells, and Lara O’Reilly, Wall Street Journal, July 2nd, 2018, Monday, B4). Please explain and support your points.

3. The Abuse of CMC
Have
you or others experienced the violation of privacy in the use of CMC?
Please share some of the cases. What do people do to protect their
privacy in the use of CMC? Have you or others you know experienced
other damaging action through CMC? Please describe your experiences and
what steps you have taken or you are going to take. For this section
if you do not have personal experiences you need to do some research and
talk about the cases you have found.
