REVIEW
Review the assigned reading to prepare for this discussion.
Many projects fail due to lack of change control. As discussed earlier in the course, identifying and documenting a clear scope is critical for a project, but controlling and managing to that scope is just as important. It is often difficult for project managers to adhere to the scope when stakeholders add pressure along the way to adjust the scope. This is called scope creep. What seems like a small adjustment to scope can have rippling effects on the remainder of the project, even causing it to fail to meet the original objective. Watch the video Managing IT Projects – Beware Scope Creep [LINK PROVIDED] (https://www.youtube.com/embed/kzS7pNmv-Cc?rel=0&autoplay=1&iv_load_policy=3), noting how easy it is for additional scope to creep in, even when it is unnecessary.
Any time a change is requested for a project, it must be documented and scoped, and a detailed justification for the change needs to be shared so that the stakeholders involved can make an informed decision on whether or not the change is viable at the time of the request. This is part of the change control and approval process.
RESPOND
For the discussion this week, discuss the following:
What are the critical elements in justifying a change?
What are some of the reasons that a change request might be denied?
Think of an example from a work situation where a change was denied. What happened, and why was it not approved?
