Purpose: Critique and analyze a film review.
Skills: Critical analysis of a text
Task:
1) Find TWO film reviews of a film of your choosing: one positive and one negative. I recommend you use Rotten Tomatoes because they are easily distinguishable. Make sure the reviews you find are by CRITICS, not by the audience.
2) In your critique, discuss WHAT the critic is saying and HOW it is being said. Focus on critiquing the REVIEW and not the film. Resist the urge to summarize or discuss the film itself. Use your knowledge of critical analysis to build your discussion around your critique of the film review.
3) Include in your discussion whether the review is effective. You can do this through comparison or contrast, identifying which of the two reviews is more effective. “The (positive review) is more effective because it focuses on ______ versus the (negative review) which does not discuss ________,” for example.
Criteria for Success
1) Times New Roman, 12 point font, double spaced, minimum of two pages.
2) Refrains from the use of 1st/2nd person pronouns (I, you, we, us, our, me, etc.) and contractions.
3) Explores an analysis of the review rather than focuses on the action of the plot of the film.
4) Cite at least 3 sources in MLA format. This includes the two film reviews you find as well as the film that you review.
