Select three pairs of poems and explain why you think they can be paired together. For each pair pick one poem from the first part of the book, “Mandolin,” and a poem from the second part of the book, “Canary in Bloom.” Look for events and places that come up in both sections. Rita Dove explains the reason why the poems in the two parts of the book parallel each other in this one-hour documentary.
An example of two poems that would be a logical pair would be “Courtship” on pp. 16-17 in the “Mandolin” section and “Courtship, Diligence” on p. 50 of the “Canary in Bloom” section. You are welcome to use this suggested pair of poems as one of your selected three pairs of poems (or not; it’s entirely up to you!).
