In an essay of at least five paragraphs, with an introduction and a conclusion, discuss how important religion has been to the national narrative and to America’s sense of mission at home and abroad. How important do you think it will remain to the American story? What religious directions do you imagine the American story might take in the years ahead? Instructor guidelines: – It’s not asking you if religion has been important, it has been important – So that’s what you’re going to talk about and so basically what you’re doing in that is summarizing the whole course and as much detail as you can give – You can start at the beginning with the pilgrims or the puritans and the Spanish attempts to convert the Indians and then the founding of the colonies and the religious overtones of that; The great awakening, the contribution of the great awakening to the revolutionary war; The settlement of the West, the contribution of churches to the settlement of the West, the contribution of the traveling preachers of the great awakenings to the West, the conversion of the African American slaves, and the great awakening; The role of religion in the reform movements, prohibition, civil rights, prison reform; The World Wars, the Cold War just telling the story of our important religion has been to the story and to America’s sense of mission. – Then the second part is how important do you think it will remain to the American story, this is your opinion but it’s your informed opinion based on what you’ve learned. Do you think, religion, will continue to be important, are we on the verge of another great awakening, or are religion falling away, or are people getting more secular and religion won’t be as important, some of you have expressed that opinion in some of the discussions. You’re going to develop your opinion there and tie it to the concrete facts that you’ve learned. So the idea is to synthesize and consolidate what you’ve learned so that it’s not just a bunch of nonsense little facts, but that you have a coherent story that you can tell. – No citations or references
