I have chosen to do it on the experience of Transgender-women (referring specifically to the olympics) but if this is too specific feel free to choose something else or alter the topic if needed. (I tend to write about the queer and trans experience)
I will be attaching reading materials from my class as well as one of my writing pieces (as reference to my writing style).
CRITERIA:
Individual Research Project
In-depth exploration of a trending social or political issue
We will be adapting this to be an individual research project. You will now be conducting this on
your own and will be uploading 5 slides with your presentation notes as if you were going to have
presented it in class.
Explain how you will research feminist commentary, analyses, and critiques of current political and social concerns.
To create and present an engaging way of communicating your research and analysis to the class.
Guidelines:
• Students will search for and identify an event or an issue that has trended in the news or on
social media within this semester that directly connects with our course themes. Students will
identify some of the key aspects of that issue and explore them in a research project. This will
require students to be creative, thoughtful, and diligent with their research.
• You must use a minimum of 2 academic sources for your research presentation. These
sources must be from outside of the course outline. You can also use course readings, but
they must be in addition to the 2 academic sources that are required.
• Each student will develop a 5-minute individual presentation. We will be using a 5 minute/5 slide
model. This means that you will be able to show 5 slides, which may consist of images, textual
quotes, etc. You will have 5 minutes to present your individual research. In your analysis, be sure to
consider the role of ideologies/beliefs, institutions/power structures, and personal experiences.
Reflect on the social construction of gender, class, race and ethnicity, age, religion, ability,
and sexuality as it plays out in various political and social issues. Think about personal and
collective resistance to the status quo – how it works, how it feels. Reflect on your own possibly
contradictory relationship to whatever issue you have chosen. Examine what you’ve personally
learned from this research.
You will upload the following:
• 5 slides that are saved as a pdf file.
• Your presentation notes or scriipt. This is the text for the verbal part of your presentation that
would have accompanied your slides if you had been able to present them in class. Generally, 1
typed page of double-spaced text will equal about 1 minute of speaking time. Think of this as a 5-
minute presentation. Use in-text citations in your scriipt to indicate how you have used your
research.
• Bibliography citing at least 2 academic sources from outside of the syllabus that you used in
your presentation.
• Be sure to include the hashtag or news article that inspired your presentation in your bibliography.
