Here is Latoya’s response: With a brick and mortar stores, customers are able to enjoy those days out shopping with friends and family, try on clothing, feel the quality of items and get them immediately especially convenient when needed for a last minute event. Most consumers will buy more than what they actually came to purchase while shopping in a store also. Storefronts and their beautiful displays influence people to make impulse purchases and allow to run special events to have sales and get more customers in to shop like Macy’s friends and family day sales. Online stores are also convenient and easy, to search and find items for purchase, compare item prices between store from anywhere once you have internet access. It’s easier to find deals and coupons online, and the stores save a lot of money by using warehouses to ship their products instead of having storefronts. In order to capitalize their business I would recommend brick and mortar stores, to also have an online store for consumers to shop; they can search the stores inventory, price items and make purchases to be shipped to them. This also allows the brick and mortar store to expand their client base beyond the region of the store but worldwide.

Here is Cathy’s response Brick and mortar stores focus on the in person experience. The goods are able to be seen up close and in person, and are also able to be taken out of the store the same day as purchase. That experience is what differentiates them from online shopping. Instant gratification is a huge part of their competitive advantage, as the in store experience is something all stores compete for. Their main goals are to sell the most products and have the best in store experience. Every brick and mortar retailer wants the customer to purchase their product from one of their stores. This is why they aim to always have adequate stock of all their products.

Online retailers have different goals and different ways in which they gain competitive advantage. First off, they aren’t concerned with an in-store experience or instant gratification, as delayed gratification and ease of use are their main goals. They gain competitive advantage with price, their websites, and customer reviews. Customer reviews help the online retailer gain popularity if they are positive.

My recommendation to the brick and mortar stores would be for those store to also have an online presence, the same way Walmart has done, so that they can compete with these online, e-commerce retailer. This would also allow them to have pick up centers, and perhaps even allow for consumers to receive their goods sooner than if they purchased then online.
