Many individuals with pathological addictions want to quit, and they try very hard to overcome
their addiction. “Pathological Addiction” is defined as a strong habit that is maintained despite
harmful consequences (p. 216). Frequently this involves ingesting substances, such as coffee or
cocaine. It can also involve behaviors, such as gambling or skydiving, which effect biochemistry.
Describe the synaptic processes involved, how substances and behaviors affect the brain’s
reinforcement system. Describe some treatment approaches. What do you think key factors
may be in overcoming destructive habits and addictions?
