With your remaining time today, we would like for you to apply the concepts in the readings to music and music videos. In your discussion thread today you should plan to do the following:
Discuss the difference between something being pornographic and something being erotic. You should provide your own definition for each term based on what you learned from the assigned readings and your own knowledge (feel free to do additional research or cite other helpful sources).
Use your definitions, as well as any helpful information from the assigned readings/your personal research, to identify two songs/music videos. One of the videos/songs should be “pornographic” in nature and one should be “erotic” in nature. Provide the link for each of these songs/music videos in your discussion post.
Reflect on why you made this distinction between the two songs/music videos. How did you distinguish between something being pornographic or erotic? Did you struggle with this? Why or why not? Also consider, what is the relationship between the song’s lyrics and the music video–do they do different things to convey meaning/intent? How?
In discussing the above in your discussion thread, be sure to refer to and cite the readings (or other literature) to support any claims you make to support your analysis. You only need to provide in-text citations, no need for a “reference page” style citation. But you need to cite materials!
Use this as an opportunity to reflect more broadly on the nature of sexual expression in the societies from which your chosen music samples come from. Does the nature of the pornographic and/or the erotic change based on where (in the world) or when (in history) we are situated? (Consider constructionist vs realist perspectives here as well)
