Your company produces gas turbine engines and it is located in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania . One steady customer is in Vilnius, Lithuania and their typical order consists of two turbine engines (each weighing 17,333 lbs.) being shipped in one 40’ container (empty container weight 8,267 lbs.). Currently it takes about 28 days for each shipment to go from Pittsburg to Vilnius. The customer has calculated that each shipment, using the current transport route being used, emits 1750 kg of CO2. To meet corporate objectives (that are heavy influenced by national policy) the customer is requiring you to reduce the route emissions to under 1100 kg of CO2. They will allow shipping time to increase to 36 days.
The transport route you have been using is:
Container is loaded at the plant and trucked to the Port of New York/New Jersey. The distance is 360 miles
It takes 1 hour for the truck to drop the container in the port
Dwell time (time the container will sit at the terminal before being loaded onto a ship) in Port Newark is 3 days
A containership receives the container and transports it to the Port of Bremerhaven Germany where it is loaded onto another ship that delivers it to the Port of Klaipėda, Lithuania
Dwell time the Port of Klaipėda is 2 days
The container is then trucked from the Port of Klaipėda to Vilnius. The distance is 308km
In the U.S., assume the truck drivers drive 10 hours a day and will average 55 mph. In Europe assume the drivers can drive 10 hours a day twice in a week and the rest of the time they are limited to 9 hours (for more detail see (Links to an external site.) ). Also assume they average 80 kilometers per hour. Cost prevents the company from using team drivers.
Assume dwell times in the marine terminal on the US side will remain the same if a different US port is used.
Assume dwell times in the marine terminal on the European side will remain the same if a different European port is used.
If you wish to use a train to move the container you must show that a freight rail line exists and assume the average speed of the train is 30 mph in the US and 20 in Europe kilometers per hour plus add ½ a day to each end of a leg (e.g. Evansdale to Newark) for loading/unloading and drayage. Trains are not limited by driver hours of service (the trains companies swap out the engineers as needed). To estimate the distance the train must travel for this exercise, you can use the highway distances between the same origin and destination. If you are using river systems use Google Earth to measure the distance on the river (click on the ruler, select path, and then plot course on the river) assume a speed of 4 kts on U.S. rivers and 9 kts on rivers in Europe. If river systems are used, you must show that there are vessels moving containers on the rivers.
Websites you should use:
To calculate the CO2 emissions use: (Links to an external site.) Use the TTW (Tank to Wheel) measurements
If you wish to compare the distances between maritime ports, you can use one of the two links that follow: (Links to an external site.)

To view the rail network in Europe use (Links to an external site.)
To view the rail networks in this part of the U.S. you can access the following rail maps:

Watch out, there are numerous units of measurement being used (like the real world). Of particular note, nautical miles are different from miles we use in the U.S. U.S. tons (2000 lbs) are often referred to as short tons and metric tons (1000kgs or about 2200lbs) are sometimes referred to as long tons, or tonnes.
The ocean shipping company or companies you select to use must offer the services you are choosing. To start your search you might Google ‘ocean carriers to Lithuania’ I am not concerned about what shipping date you select however, you do need to show the number of days the voyage is schedule to take (according to the shipping lines schedules).
The truck size you should select when using the carbon calculator is 22-36T (36T is roughly 79, 000 lbs)
What you need to turn in for this assignment is:
A descriiption of the route and modes of transportation you recommend using. If rail is involved show the rail line (just take a screen shot of the rail map being used).
Show screenshots ship schedules or total days from the ocean carrier or carriers you selected
Indicate the time each leg of the shipment will take and the total time involved
Show a screenshots of the CO2 calculations
