Write a literature review is a critical summary of the prevailing scholar opinions about your selected artist, movement, or artwork. That is, it “reviews” of what people have said about your topic in the existing literature. For this paper, you will describe the major themes and trends of the sources in your bibliography. You should consider questions such as: How have scholars typically approached my artist, artwork, or issue? What have they said? What are their specific arguments and interpretations? Why have they approached it in this way? Has this approach changed over time? How? Most importantly, you should conclude your literature review by thinking about what is missing in the scholarly interpretations of your artist/artwork/issue. What IS NOT discussed? What’s left out? What else do you want to know?
