Purpose: Write a 1650-word essay in formal English in response to one of the topics listed below. The coursework essay must show evidence of reading and/or listening/viewing by the inclusion of ‘in-text’ references and a list of works cited. You must cite a minimum of five sources chosen from the recommended list of sources for each essay topic below in the assessment. You may choose to cite additional sources from the recommended list in the essay, as well as other quality sources (that is, credible audio-visual sources, academic book chapters, academic journal articles and so forth).
The coursework essay should contain:
The essay topic stated clearly before the introduction.
A brief introduction that outlines the aim of the essay and the structure of the essay (approximately 150–180 words);
The body of the essay should provide coherent analysis and discussion of at least five sources drawn from the appropriate recommended list for the chosen essay topic, arranged in logical sequence with sub-headings with clear and well-developed paragraphing (approximately 1200–1450 words).
You may choose to include additional sources drawn from the recommended list for the chosen essay topic, as well as other quality sources (that is, academic books, academic book chapters, academic journal articles, credible audio-visual sources, and so forth).
Appropriate citation of at least five sources using ‘in-text’ references drawn from the appropriate recommended list for the chosen essay topic.
A brief conclusion that summarises succinctly the main points discussed in the body of the essay (approximately 150–180 words).
A word count cited after the conclusion but before the list of works cited. Note: Include subheadings, quoted material and in-text citations in the word count. However, do not include the list of works cited or any brief explanatory footnotes in the word count.
Following the final word count, and on a separate page, provide a list of works cited containing appropriate citations pertaining to the sources referenced in the body of the text. Ensure to list sources alphabetically by author surnames.
The essay must employ the School of Music Ethnomusicology ‘author-date’ (Harvard) referencing system. Full details of how to use this reference system are available on Moodle.

1. With reference to two or more examples, discuss some of the ways in which popular music is linked to identity in Australia.
2. How has one of hip hop’s subgenres, e.g. ‘gangsta rap’, influenced the development of hip hop culture?
3. How have music and history shaped each other in Jamaica and/or the Jamaican diaspora?
