Paper topic: Dowler (2003:109) has discovered in his research on media consumption and public attitudes towards crime and justice that the effect that the media has on theublic revolves around two interconnected issues. These issues are media induced fear of sensationalized crime and the subsequent creation of fear induced
crime policies. It is important to examine “public opinion about criminal justice because of its potential influence on the development, implementation and effectiveness of crime policies” (Pickett et al. 2015:501). In your paper, I would like you to explore the interconnection of these two issues. Specifically, I would like you to examine whether the extensive coverage of crime creates fear among the general public and does this fear influence criminal justice policy? Discuss.
