The first paper assignment, due on March 27 , is a four-five page (4 pages minimum) paper on any story or essay that we have read and discussed in class. This paper will directly analyze the story in a discussion of a major theme, character analysis, conflict, problems, or issues, and any special literary features such as historical setting and background, imagery, or symbolism. If you choose an essay to write about, you should discuss a few major ideas of the writer, and explain these ideas. You may comment on your view of these ideas if you like, although this is not a requirement.
The paper should include at least two quotations from the story or essay which emphasize your points. The paper should not focus on plot summary, but may include a brief summary of the action in order to set the scene, or situate or explain a scene that you are commenting on. The paper should not include information about the author’s life or background information taken from an internet site.
The paper should be typed using MLA format (see Owl Purdue: MLA General Format and Sample Paper).
Most importantly, the paper cannot include any material from any internet site. It should be your own writing and your own thoughts in your own personal voice and style, at whatever level that is. The paper will go through the plagiarism checker.
