The summary and response is actually one of the simplest and most common formats for an essay at the college level. It consists of only two major parts: the summary and the response. It is unique in that it delineates (defines) that one part of the essay will be factual (background information) and the other will consist of opinion (argument). For this assignment, you will compose a summary about a specific movement (focusing on a time period between the end of WWII and now) to bring equality to a particular group (LGBTQ+, Women, African Americans, Latinx, Asian-American, etc.) and then compose a strong response in which you provide an analysis of the movement – what is still left to do? Your summary should be 900-1100 words. Your response should be 900-1100 words. How to Proceed Research a specific movement. If you need help identifying a movement, consider using History.com to help you brainstorm (ONLY TO GET IDEAS). If that doesn’t work, please talk with Mrs. Cooksey or Mr. Malloy. Select one movement to concentrate your summary/strong response on and then gather information about the respective movement (purpose of the movement, origin, notable accomplishments, significant leaders, etc.) from post- WWII to today. The sources you use to do this SHOULD NOT be reference sources, but instead academic sources written by experts in the field. After collecting information on your respective movement, you will then need to paraphrase (put into your own words) the essence of what you have learned about this movement. Being able to summarize a movement and then paraphrase it, or put it in your own words, is a very important skill that will help you going forward. It is something you will be asked to do again. Remember, paraphrasing does require citation. Once you’ve paraphrased the information you’ve collected, you will compose a summary that details the specifics of your respective movement. You will need to include in-text citations in this section to ensure that you do not plagiarize and to ensure you give proper credit to the sources whose ideas or information you used. After finishing the summary portion of this essay, you will then compose the strong response section. For the strong response, you will provide an analysis of the movement – what it has done and what is left to do. This should be done by combining and FOCUSING on the arguments of experts to build your side of the argument. Again, your sources for information regarding your argument should be academic in nature, written by experts.
