The Research Paper reflects in-depth study of a specific aspect within a body of work. Include both firsthand observations (or as close as you can get) of details from works you examine as well as evidence from research. Evaluation of your Paper is based both on the content of the Paper as well as your ability to convey information and ideas in writing. Submit a well-written and organized Paper in which your sources are adequately and properly documented. Before you hand in your Paper, please reread these instructions carefully to make sure that you have followed the directions.
Your Paper must include citations from scholarly sources. It should be double-spaced, have one-inch margins, be in 12-point text with @300 words per page (this does not include illustrations, which are generally not necessary, footnotes, endnotes, or any other supplemental material).
Follow the Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) format. For footnotes, use the same font size as the text in the body of your Paper. For titles of works of art, book titles, and foreign words (for example, in situ), put them in italics. Please number the pages.
For citations, use either an endnote or a footnote system, according to the Chicago Manual of Style: https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html Do not use parenthetical references in the text or the body of the Paper (also described as the “author-date system”). The first time you cite a source, use the form for a “first note citation in a work without full bibliography.” You can either put the footnotes at the bottom of the page (footnotes) or at the end of the Paper (endnotes– it’s up to you). Please take special note of how to cite subsequent references, that is, “shortened citations.”
Do not include a bibliography with your Research Paper.
Content:
Carefully organize the important information and main ideas of your Paper. In the first paragraph, introduce and fully identify your subject, your Thesis, the main themes of your paper, and perhaps methods of analysis. Then, in a logical sequence of well-structured paragraphs that comprise the body of the Paper, develop each of the themes you introduced in the first paragraph. Begin with the most important theme, which may be to explain what is known about the pieces you are discussing or your specific Thesis.
For each work you discuss offer an analysis of the facts surrounding it, include a straight-forward identification of the work’s subject matter and context. Describe the composition of the piece and its style (for example, how it has characteristics of the style of the period or an artist’s personal style). To illustrate specific points and support your arguments, you are welcome to discuss other works of art, but do not pad your Paper with information that is not directly related to the pieces you have chosen to write about or your Topic and Thesis.
It is not necessary generally to include illustrations of the works you discuss, only give specific enough information or a link, so that I can look up the image online if necessary. The main themes of your Paper should always address an issue and make a point that is directly related to the pieces that are the main subject of your Paper. End with a summation of your research and ideas in the final paragraph of your Paper.
Sources for all particular facts and interpretations must be cited in footnotes or endnotes. Your own observations and ideas are critical. The Paper amalgamates your thoughts, information you have found and the opinions of others. A main purpose of writing a Research Paper is to learn how to put information and others’ ideas into your own words and to document your sources correctly.
For this assignment, you may use quotation marks or clearly note that you are citing the specific wording from any source. It is best to put all information and ideas into your own words and then use footnotes to let your reader know exactly where to locate the material. If you include ten or more words verbatim from a text – you must clearly quote that source. Always use a footnote when you introduce information or an idea that is not your own. If you quote from a primary source, you must also use a footnote.
Submit your Paper as a Word.Doc through Assignments through the course site. If that is not possible, email it as a Word.Doc attachment.
