Your research report should consist of four parts:
Analyze the structure/style of the encyclopedia article (approx. 150 words) (30 points): Offer a “road map” of the article and how the author organizes information. Use the above critical reading and critical thinking readings from Module 1 for ideas about how to read strategically. (For example, focus on subheadings, topic/first sentences of each paragraph, etc.). In your post, explain how the author gets from beginning to end, emphasizing time periods, places, and people of focus. For example, “The author begins the article by providing an overview of why the movement was important in U.S. history. She then explains its origins in the nineteenth century, its main forms of activism in the twentieth century, and how activists accomplished their mission. She notes that in the early twentieth century, advocates formed professional societies, and by 1920….” Discuss whether you think the author’s organization of the information and writing style are effective, drawing from the text to justify your points.
Analyze the key argument in the article (approx. 150 words) (30 points): What big point(s) do you think the author is trying to make in the article? Why, according to the author, is the social movement important? What were its major challenges, and successes?
Explain your own perspective (approx. 100 words) (25 points): Share an analysis of, or question about, a compelling point made by the author. You could also bring up a topic, point, or question that the author overlooks. Feel free to highlight a particular quote from the text.
Share the title of at least one primary source you may analyze in the Module 5 research report and write 1-2 sentences about why you think it may be interesting, surprising, and/or compelling. (approx. 75 words, 15 points)
