The Shawshank Redemption captures the true horrors that prison inmates must endure while incarcerated. When Andy Dufresne said, “get busy living or get busy dying,” he expressed the pain and agony of being a felon in an American prison system. The frustration of living in dreadful conditions had forced Andy to “get busy living” by refusing to spend the rest of his life in prison, where he would eventually die and instead find a way to escape. This 1994 movie conveys the harsh reality of the prison system in which suffering and reduced quality of life are considered rehabilitation.
