Identify three or four passages in which the narrator makes an observation about an
individual, society, or both. Each passage should be drawn from the first 16 chapters of
Jane Eyre, and each may be up to two paragraphs in length. Type up each observation (one or more sentences), noting the page number where it
can be found. Paraphrase each observation in a sentence. After paraphrasing the observations from the three or four passages, mark the two or
three most important observations. Finally, use these observations to craft a thesis statement for the following essay
prompt: What do these observations reveal about the narrator’s personality, ideas, or
preferences?
