Fundamental motor skills are the building blocks of motor behaviour throughout the lifespan. Find a 3-11 year old child, and with their parents’ permission, spend a minimum of 45 minutes with that child in a physical activity setting observing a variety of their motor skills (one each of: stationary skill, object control skill and locomotor skill as well as an integrated/complex skill).
Active participation with that child is recommended – in other words watching the child while sitting to the side is not recommended. Please adhere to all relevant public health guidelines including masking and physical distancing during your observation. If you are unable to actively participate with the child due to physical distancing concerns (e.g., the child is not in your social bubble), please just observe them from a safe distance. If needed, you may also complete your observation virtually, with the help of the child’s parent/caregiver. It is not acceptable to watch children you do not know at the park or another venue. If you have difficulty finding someone with a child in that age range let either the TA or Professor know.
Write a report detailing the age and sex of the child and describe where they are in their motor development based on what you observed of their motor skills. (Observations may be done with partners or in small groups – but all assignments must be submitted individually).
All assignments are to be 3-4 pages (3 full page minimum, 4 page maximum – not including title page or references), double spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 pt font. All assignments are due at midnight of their due date. Late assignments will receive 10% off per day (including weekends) for 3 days and after that the grade will be a zero. A minimum of 1 peer reviewed reference (e.g. the text books don’t count) is required for each assignment. Referencing must be done in APA style in both the text and the reference list.
