1. Steps
a. Draft an outline for this process essay and write the process essay. You must explain the process in detail of how a student might use this as a strategy to improve performance in an academic context.
b. As you are expected to reference this video, you will refer to the video specifically and the speaker in your essay.
c. Your essay is not a summary of the TED Talk. This is not an essay in which you simply explain what happened in the TED Talk video. The TED Talk is intended to be a stimulus for this essay. Define your purpose, your audience, and your context for explaining the process you wish to describe. Your audience is not familiar with this video.
d. Of course, you can refer to the transcript of this TED Talk. However, if you use the exact words from this transcript, it will be plagiarism and you will receive a failing grade. To avoid plagiarism, you need to put phrases from the TED Talk in quotation marks and/or rephrase the ideas wi th a reference to the speaker.
e. Your essay’s structure must reflect a chronological organizational order. That is, be sure that your first step, for example, needs to be completed before the next step, and so on.
3. Your outline must be only one page long and point-form. Do not include too many details as this outline is to be a guide for you and not to be created after you have written the essay. You should consider pg. 82 as an outline template.
4. Who is your audience?
Your essay must include information and/or examples that are relevant to your audience. Be sure that your audience is clear in your introduction.
5. How to submit?
a. Save your outline in a pdf document and upload it to the assignment portal.
b. Save your essay in a Word file and upload it to the assignment portal.
c. Put your name, student number and the words ‘outline’ and ‘essay’ respectively in the file names.
6. We will discuss the genre of process essays in class. You are advised to refer to the textbook for this topic as well. (p. 123-127)
7. Late assignments will not be accepted.
8. There is no word limit; be sure that your ideas are complete and clearly supported and that they represent a process rather than a list of ideas.
