Is adjusting our language, depending on our audience, a means of empowering ourselves? Why or why not?
This week we are going to write an essay that responds to one of the following prompts. Be sure to read the instructions!
The questions below are based on the articles you have studied in class. You should have a copy of each article with you.
Be sure your essay addresses all parts of the question.
You are permitted to use two writing aids on this exam: (1) a dictionary, and (2) notes on the articles that you made in the margins or blank spaces of the exam readings. Any outside sources used on the exam will disqualify you from the essay and result in a 0.
As you develop your thesis centerd essay of at least 500 words, make sure that you provide sufficient support and explanation by integrating examples (at least two direct quotes–one from each reading) from the both readings, “Nobody Mean More to Me than You and the Future Life of Willie Jordan”, by June Jordan & “The Overwhelming Nature of Code Switching”, by Mathew Salesses in your essay. Failure to incorporate both readings will result in failure of the essay.
Analyze your examples to show their relevance to your argument. Use your own observations, experiences, or other sources to develop your claims. When you cite directly from the readings, use proper MLA page citation.
Read the following three questions carefully and then choose only ONE question to answer. You will then write a thesis-centered essay of at least 500 words in response to this one question using direct quotes from, “Nobody Mean More to Me than You and the Future Life of Willie Jordan”, by June Jordan & “The Overwhelming Nature of Code Switching”, by Mathew Salesses to support your writing.
Guidelines When Writing an Academic Paper:
An academic paper should have at least five paragraphs:
Example One:
Paragraph 1. Introduction
Don’t begin with the reading material.
Begin by telling the reader about the topic you will be discussing for the remainder of the paper. This essay is not about the reading materials. It is about your thoughts and ideas that are brought up by what the reading materials are discussing.
Your thesis should appear as the last sentence of this paragraph.
A strong thesis should be the central focus of the paper
Paragraph 2: Body Paragraph One:
Each body paragraph should have a topic sentence, which relates directly to the thesis.
Do not begin a paragraph with a quotation.
Everything that follows that topic sentence should relate back to that topic sentence, which should compliment your thesis.
Quotes can be used to support your claims.
There should be smooth transitions between body paragraphs.
Paragraph 3: Body Paragraph Two:
Each body paragraph should have a topic sentence, which relates directly to the thesis.
Do not begin a paragraph with a quotation.
Everything that follows that topic sentence should relate back to that topic sentence, which should compliment your thesis.
Quotes can be used to support your claims.
There should be smooth transitions between body paragraphs.
Paragraph 4: Body Paragraph Three:
Each body paragraph should have a topic sentence, which relates directly to the thesis.
Do not begin a paragraph with a quotation.
Everything that follows that topic sentence should relate back to that topic sentence, which should compliment your thesis.
Quotes can be used to support your claims.
There should be smooth transitions between body paragraphs.
Paragraph 5: Conclusion:
Here is where you wrap your paper up by reconsidering or furthering the thesis.
Tie everything together.
No new evidence should be presented.
End your paper.
Example of another Essay Structure (there are many variations):
Introduction: (Paragraph One)
Hook (get your audience interested with a synopsis / short story/ a good quote)
Answer the question asked in the prompt fully noting the difference between what the authors believe and what you believe. Introduce the reading(s) and the author(s) to set up the paper.
State your thesis, which should further the author’s (authors’) thesis. Further question the topic past the author’s thesis or argue against the author’s thesis.
First Body Paragraph: (Paragraph Two)
Topic sentence that ties the first point of your argument to your thesis.
Evidence or example that sets up exploration of your first argument point.
Paraphrasing if that example is a quote.
Critical look at the example if you use a synopsis that goes beyond the obvious.
Analysis sentence that shows a furthering of your argument based on the evidence
Second and Third Paragraphs (Paragraphs Three and Four)
Repeat the format of the first body paragraph, varying points of arguments, evidence and analysis to look at the angles of the argument you have chosen.
Conclusion Paragraph: (Paragraph Five)
Further look at your thesis by using a counter argument or comparing points from your body paragraphs or asking further questions.
USING QUOTED TEXT IN AN ESSAY:
Quoting is a three-step process. Quotes should be:
Introduced-There should be a lead in sentence.
Cited, using MLA formatted in text citations
Explained. Why is the quote relevant? How does it connect to the topic sentence/thesis? They should support claims you are making about the topic of your paper.
Do not begin a body paragraph with a quotation:
Begin each body paragraph with a topic sentence or mini thesis that relates to your thesis.
This paper is not about the readings/texts. It is about your thoughts and ideas about your chosen topic.
The readings/texts are there to support YOUR claims.
You should introduce title and author of the text you are referring to before referencing a text in a quotation.
