Review how Indigenous Peoples, (First Nation, Metis, or Inuit People) are being represented in the media in our contemporary context. This review can include examining both Mainstream Media, (Newspapers, Television, & Social Media) and Indigenous Media (Newspapers, Television, [such as APTN] & Social Media).
Pick a contemporary media issue that you see represented.
Clarify why you have chosen this topic? That is, why it is a topic of interest to you?
Then refer to the learning objectives for this course. Determine how this media issue relates to some of the learning objectives? (Please note your understanding of this may change as you progress in this course).
Engage in a further search/inquiry pertaining to this contemporary media issue.
Based upon this search/inquiry what beginning information are you coming up with? Define some beginning questions and/or ideas that this preliminary inquiry presents to you.
Summarize the above in about 250 words. You will need to be succinct, and to the point. Please refer to an Abstract Format that you can find in Scholarly Journals to give you some ideas about how to write your summary.
Include a Title Page, and a References Page in APA format. Your references must relate to your search/inquiry. It may also include other references you intend to make use of in your paper. (Please note you are required to have between 8-10 References for your Term Paper. You may make use of threereferences that you obtain from your course material for your Term Paper. Your references will refer to information that you have obtained through the media. However, you must also resource materials, such as, literature that speaks to the background context of your topic, a critical analysis of the issues involved, a critical analysis of how mainstream media represents the issue(s), etc.)

Media Issue
Select a contemporary media issue that is focussed on First Nation, Métis or Inuit People, and write an essay containing the following:
–a clear description and presentation of the issue and its context(s);
–your assessment of the relevance of the issue (personally & otherwise) and any media bias or inaccuracies you note;
–a discussion of the issue from the perspective of relevant literature and course content (extensive use of literature required);
–your reactions to and reflections on the issue;
–the relevance of the issue to social work and how you (we) might consider addressing it;
–how completing this assignment might inform your social work practice, clarifying your role as helper, ally, etc.
This assignment requires you to blend critical/conceptual analysis and discussion with a personal reflective/reflexive style. The essay should contain components of a traditional “academic” essay, but it must be written in the 1st person, because it includes your opinions, reactions, the questions you have that remain unanswered and important the learning you have gained from completing the assignment.
The suggested format for your 2500-word paper (cover page and reference page not included in the count) is as follows:
Title Cover page.
Introduction of media issue concerning an Indigenous social issue, with a thesis statement.
Social Location – locate who you are, in relationship to the topic of your paper.
Background context for the paper (i.e., how is this related to social welfare, social work with/for Indigenous peoples). Literature must be used to support and/or explain yourself.
Critical/conceptual analysis revealing relevant questions about, or raised to challenge the media, literature and/or social work practise. Analysis of limitations of mainstream social work in working with Indigenous peoples.
Discussion from a personal reflexive style indicating transformative learning. Include any experiential learning and how this reflects your view of social work. The discussion must also speak to and clarify what your role will be as helper, ally, etc.
Concluding with questions that remain unanswered, and what steps you would like to take to find out answers to these unanswered questions.

Related to the above, ability to present a critical/conceptual analysis revealing relevant questions described in point 5 of the suggested format.
Ability to write in a blended style including both a critical/conceptual analysis/discussion with a personal reflective/reflexive style, reflecting transformative learning.
Ability to relate the paper to helping and/or social work practice with Indigenous Peoples, describing how you see your role as ally/helper.
Ability to write an appropriate conclusion to your paper, including questions that have remained unanswered, as well as clarifying what steps need to be taken to answer these questions.
