In popular American society, education is often considered universally good for you. It is almost never considered bad. Everyone from your parents to important leaders say “Get your education, and you will do well.” However, Jeff Duncan-Andrade seems to argue for a more political view of education. He views it as a tool that can be used for enslavement or empowerment, a social system that helps builds conformity for the status quo or decolonization and liberation for a new consciousness and a new society. For him, it all comes down to whether educators are teaching critical thinking or not. According to Duncan-Andrade, how does critical thinking function to help foster personal or societal liberation? This assignment is asking you to write an analysis of an argument. Your analysis essay must: Demonstrate an insightful way of answering the question Focus more on analysis with only minimal use of summary (imagine your audience has already read Duncan-Andrade) and has already engaged in discussion). He needs your unique analysis; not a summary of his arguments. Be relatively free from distracting grammatical and mechanical errors. Use MLA document design and citation. Write no less than 800 words. TIP Because this is a short writing assignment, focus on what you believe to be the most compelling aspect of Duncan-Andrade’s argument.
