The core of the assignment is focused upon Joppee and its surrounding environment in order to develop a master plan site design, for utilizing the Honey Springs Branch to help in the stabilization effort in Joppee. Demonstrate your understanding and effective utilization of site designs by The Master Plan is first tasked with unifying a) the Honey Springs Branch Greenway, a 4.5-mile green way from the Trinity River west to Kiest Boulevard b) the Honey Springs Branch Wetlands, c) the three Honey Springs Lakes and d) existing Joppee Greenspace as a Park entity to add to the Stabilization Overlay process for Joppee. The Park outlined above by the red line in the Google Image, includes 200+ acres to be turned into a comprehensive, well programmed public park connected to the cultural and historical significance of Joppee. The Master Plan should do this by tying together the five major elements within the 200 acres The four elements are as follows: 1. A Recreation and Gathering Site – A 2.5-acre site within the Park, currently serving as a paved parking lot area and a Live Oak trees grove existing area. This previously served as the parking area for the former golf course. 2. A Wetlands and Boardwalks Site – A 34-acre part of the Park where the Honey Springs Branch fans out and drains under the concrete trail and into the adjacent lake. The area represents the various places where the Honey Springs Branch connected over the years to the Trinity River, and now function more as wetlands, sometimes submerged in water depending on storm events and other water influences. It may require boardwalks and other methods of restricting foot traffic and or vehicle traffic as it transitions from its past use as a major part of the former golf course. 3. The 2-mile Lake Path, A Portion of the Trinity River Loop Trail – A 2-mile existing north to south trail further developed and designed to fully connect to South Central Park in Joppee, Loop 12 to the south, the Southern Pacific Rail Line to the north. The Trail will serve as the major circulation through the Park tying the design and programmatic elements into a unified public space. 4. Research and Educational Center – A 4.5-acre development similar in size to the southern island of the lower Honey Springs Lake dedicated to water research and education. This 10k square feet Research Center and campus will be operated by the Joppee South Central Civic League Neighborhood Association and multiple higher education institutions. The site with green infrastructure for power, sanitation and water, will potentially become a central center for monitoring and further developing the lower cell lakes for the City of Dallas. As an island, the site will be accessible by a pedestrian bridge and by water. Your assignment is to develop a rough Master Plan Site Design for number 4, the Research and Educational Center, placing your site on the island or another site within the park averaging 4.5 acres in size.
