Answer each of the questions listed. Without my prompts, this paper should be 2.5 to 3
pages double spaced. DO NOT SUMMARIZE the movie! Please just leave the number
of each question to indicate which one you are answering. Do NOT leave my questions,
just the numbers.
1. What is your initial response to what you observed? Give some specific examples of
what struck you and why. Explain whether (and how) your position is emic or
etic. Also, please remember that ALL parents indoctrinate their children with their
own beliefs. Students are frequently curious about what happened to some of the Campers;
search for Jesus Camp, where are they now and you’ll find articles like this–

2. The Modernist approach to studying religion looks for the similarities between
religions, from an etic perspective, using the method of phenomenology. (Check
your notes on these items.) How would you describe these Evangelistic practices
from this point of view (what about their practice of Christianity is the same as other
types of Christianity) (how would you describe these phenomena without emotion or
judgment)? What is the strength or weakness of this approach?
3. The Postmodernist approach to studying religion looks for the differences that make
each tradition unique, from an emic perspective (if possible), using the method of
relativism. (Check your notes on these items.) How would you describe these
Evangelistic practices from this point of view (what about their practice is different
from other types of Christianity) (what do you need to know about their situation to
understand what you are viewing)? What is the strength or weakness of this
approach?
4. Even though these definitions have some inadequacies, apply ONE that you think
fits best to the situation of evangelism and explain why. Pick from these definitions
of religion:
The essence of religion consists in the feeling of an absolute dependence.
Religion is the state of being grasped by an ultimate concern, a concern which
qualifies all other concerns as preliminary and which itself contains the answer to
the question of the meaning of our life.
Religion is comparable to a childhood neurosis.
Religion literally means to bind or reconnect.
5. What is the agenda of this film? In what ways is this agenda fulfilled? How may the
filmmakers have avoided a bias? Know that there is serious editing going on…for
example, when Levis mother says that there are 2 types of people in the world
(Christians and non-Christians), they edit out her last line, which was and we love them
both. They are showing you a microcosm of these peoples worlds.
6. Academically, how does this type of worship/practice fulfill the functions of
religion? Emotional/experiential, social, intellectual?
