1. Early literature served a utilitarian function, setting it apart from much of modern literature, which is now often expected to be artistic. However, even today, people debate whether certain pieces of writing are artistic enough to count as literature. For example, some forms of writing such as fanfiction are the subject of much criticism, and many are not sure whether graphic novels should count as novels; some even question whether famous plays such as Shakespeares Hamlet should count as literature, since plays are meant to be performed, not read.
What counts as literature? Do you believe that works such as fanfiction and graphic novels should be counted as literature? Or should society be more exclusive when deciding what counts as literature? What qualities make a work of literature artistic as opposed to utilitarian?
