Research Paradigms and Christian Worldview Assignment
A worldview is an individual’s personal lifelong story as each person forms an opinion of how life should appear, how life gets off balance, and how they are going to fix the issues as this brings reality into forming a worldview (Keller & Alsdorf, 2012). Within the 21st century, individuals worldwide form their worldviews based upon their ethnic and cultural backgrounds, previous experiences, and religion. Unfortunately, the world is continuously changing, and individuals are forced to adapt to changes (Kyzym & Doronina, 2019). Today, the world is linked to social injustice, poverty, war, and misery (Keller & Alsdorf, 2012). Therefore, worldviews change over time as an individual progresses throughout life as they age. Worldviews are formed when individuals gain insight into how they perceive the outside world as they apply their worldview when making important decisions throughout life (Kyzym & Doronina, 2019). Four philosophical worldviews within research, including positivism, post-positivism, constructivism, and pragmatism, will be explained in comparison to applying the philosophical worldview and research methodology within the research process.
Four Philosophical Worldviews
Positivism
The first philosophical worldview is positivism, as this worldview dates to 1840 (Brenner, 2018). The positivist worldview is linked to natural science as all scientific hypotheses must be solely based on facts (Robson & McCartan, 2016). This worldview is value-free, has constant conjunction of events, and must clarify an event related to a general law (Robson & McCartan, 2016). Positivism must not have any imaginary or theoretical entities and is mainly based on quantitative research (Robson & McCartan, 2016).
Post-Positivism
The second philosophical worldview is called post-positivism, as this worldview focuses on social science research (Robson & McCartan, 2016). Post-positivism is linked to a specific objective, yet the researcher cannot discover it (Young & Ryan, 2020). Post-positivism research is inadequate, proving that a particular theory within research is incorrect (Young & Ryan, 2020).
Constructivism & Pragmatism
Write a paper on the third philosophical worldview is constructivism, as this view focuses on an individual versus a group and will utilize interviews and observations within the research process (Robson & McCartan, 2016). The final philological worldview is known as pragmatism. Pragmatism is linked to the researcher being practical as the research is based on experience versus a theory (Robson & McCartan, 2016). Therefore, researchers that utilize the pragmatism worldview will apply anything related to the philological and methodologist research methods to support the main research challenges (Robson & McCartan, 2016).
These four philosophical worldviews are fundamental within the research process and can help shape ones worldview. The philosophical worldview approach that supports my worldview is pragmatism, as I have never labeled any theory, research project, or any type of belief as perfect. In my opinion, humans are never perfect and make mistakes and therefore I tend to view life as imperfect just as pragmatism tend to view research as fallible. I tend to view problems in this world by understanding the importance of how influences, experiences, and reality will help to solve current and future problems throughout ones lifespan acknowledging that life is never precise and exact. Understanding the connection between philosophical worldviews and research methodology will significantly impact my research approach as I have gained a better overview of applying these worldviews to the research process. For example, based upon these four philosophical worldviews, I understand that many researchers will have altering worldviews, ultimately affecting the research project.
Conclusion
The four philosophical worldviews are very different as some focus on natural science while others concentrate on social science. These four philosophical worldviews are missing a Christ-centered worldview approach as none specifically identify any relation to the bible. However, I believe that a Christian worldview can be applied to all four philosophical worldviews as research is being conducted. Christian researchers need to apply their Christian worldview to the research process as this will show in their moral and ethnic character, along with applying Godly principles inside the workplace. Researchers can apply their Christian worldviews is identify the problem applying Gods grace (Keller & Alsdorf, 2012). 2 Co
