To demonstrate your ability to summarize and analyze, please read Regina Rini’s “Should We Rename Institutions that Honor Dead Racists?” (pp. 23-25). Then, follow the instructions below.
Develop a summary analysis response paper of three paragraphs responding to Rini’s piece. Below is a breakdown of questions to respond to in this assignment. Please note, these are the only paragraphs I need you to write for this assignment. You do not need an introduction and a conclusion. You simply need three (or four, depending on your summary) paragraphs addressing the following concerns:
Summary. In the summary paragraph, consider what the article is about and what the author said about the issue and his or her position. Be sure to introduce the article by title and author in the beginning of this paragraph.
Annotate or list to generate ideas and help with the critical reading process. Doing so will help you decide what the author is saying about the claim. Then, summarize the author’s claim and main ideas in your own words using complete sentences. Remember, if you use a word or phrase from the source, you’ll need to put it in quotes and provide a page number for documentation.
Analysis. The analysis paragraph considers how the article is organized, how the claim is stated and where it is included in the argument, what supports or proofs are provided to back the claim, whether or not the support is valid and relevant, whether or not the author establishes personal authority (does he seem an expert on the topic and how does he achieve this perception), who he addresses as his audience, whether or not the claim and evidence provided are relevant to the audience and how the author presents this information in a relevant manner, and what overall qualities make this an effective (or ineffective) argument, depending on your overall judgment.
Response. In the response paragraph, consider your personal reactions to the essay, how much common ground you have with the author, what information from the essay is new to you, what it makes you consider in terms of your issue, and what you like or dislike about it. You can also address whether or not you agree with the article if you’d like.
Please follow proper MLA formatting guidelines, eliminate “I” and “you” as much as possible (unless you are specifically responding with your reaction to the piece), and attach your submission.
Remember, a work cited page is necessary for this assignment. You can lose thirty or more points if it is missing.
