1) Essay Question
Define the new urban poverty that William J. Wilson and Luic Wacquant explore in the context of inner city areas. What are the (racial and social class) characteristics of this new urban poverty? How has this new poverty changed the profile of ghettos, el barrios, and ethnic enclaves? (hint: Consider the reasons why there is more crime, violence and illegality in ghetto areas in the contemporary period compared to the early 20th century ghettoes.)
2) Short-answer Question
How have the economic changes shifted the type of jobs available in cities in the past 50 years? How do you think various external factors such as the pandemic and changing economic needs will influence it in the near future?
3) Short-answer Question Which is likely to be worse 50 years from now: affordable housing shortages in cities of the global north, or affordable housing shortages in cities of the global south? Discuss your projections based on the context of economic globalization and fertility rates.
