Attributes that can guide team coaching include understanding the complex organizational dynamics of teamwork, as each day can bring new challenges. Partnering with the team can help solve problems and address new opportunities so that team performance can show improvement. In the book, Trillion Dollar Coach, by Schmidt, Rosenberg, and Eagle, the authors describe the growth-oriented, forward thinking of business leader Bill Campbell, who helped to build and add value to, Google, Apple, and Intuit. He was a former football player and coach, who created in business higher performing and faster-moving teams (Schmidt, Rosenberg, & Eagle, 2019). When working with teams, Mr. Campbell’s first instinct was said to be that he would first work for the team, ensuring the right team is in place. He would focus on the dynamics of the team, before trying to solve the problem in question. He would deny any personal credit, but would consistently claim it was always about the team.

Mr. Campbell emphasized choosing the right players, as he would look for “smarts and hearts.” He sought those who had “the ability to learn fast, a willingness to work hard, integrity, grit, empathy, and a team-first attitude” (Schmidt, Rosenberg & Eagle, 2019, p. 123). He believed that leaders lead, and when things are not going so well, teams should seek more loyalty, commitment, and decisive leading. He also believed in principles of empathy, that there is more achieved in leading a team to success when there is caring and concern for other people (Schmidt, Rosenberg & Eagle, 2019). In coaching groups and teams, once you choose the right people, and if you sincerely care about others, achieving success in tackling the problem becomes more attainable.
