. Describe what we mean by ‘social class’? -Social class is the socioeconomic category that captures the objective measures of wealth. The objective measures of wealth are salary, value (the car you drive), assets (portfolio/stocks/investments), income, professional status, and education. Another socioeconomic capture is a subjective measurement of things that are off the chart. Things that cannot be captured digitally. Subjective measures are also called lifestyle factors, and they include attitudes/values, consumption patterns, and class identification (how do you identify your class). In the United States, people often miss their class status. Generally speaking, social class is the consumption that combines objective and subjective measures and evaluates them. Name at least TWO social institutions that reproduce wealth, as described by Domhoff and as discussed in class, and talk briefly about how those institutions help the rich stay rich. As discussed in class today, the social organization that replicates wealth described in Domhoff is a social club. As mentioned earlier, they are private places for business, wealth, entertainment, and socializing. They all gather because the white people in the community are always private. Another social institution that Domhof talked about was the Volunteer Association. A volunteer association is for wealthy people and it′s usually populated for women. The other is marriage, which reappears objective and subjective. Finally, the education system is a combination of your wealth. The educational system is an economic and social factor. Finally, the rich stay, the rich have their own private community that is an elite.
