Constructing an Annotated Bibliography is a key part of your writing projects which depend heavily on research. Since the topic you select and the sources you collect for the Annotated Bibliography will form the basis of your evidence for this project, it is important to select a topic wisely, to create an interesting and valid research question, and to devote sufficient time to your research and annotations.

NOTE: Be sure to plan ample time to complete your research for this project—research is full of false starts and surprises and ALWAYS takes longer than expected.

As part of exploring your topic, do the following:

Develop a Research Question: Before you begin your research, create one or more related research questions on your topic that you will use to guide your research. Your research question(s) should be about something you are genuinely curious about, exploring an issue, problem, or controversy you want to examine as a result of your work on the previous assignments in this course. In addition, your research question(s) should ALSO address aspects of your topic you think others are interested in and/or need to be more knowledgeable about.

Write Your Rationale: Your Annotated Bibliography should start with a brief rationale–an introductory paragraph in which you…

Define or describe the issue, problem, or controversy you are researching; Define or describe the issue, problem, or controversy you are researching;
Explain the significance or relevance of your research question(s) (to you and to others); and
Describe what you hope to discover in your research.

Once you’ve established your topic, your research question(s), and your rationale, use the Library databases to find your sources.

TYPES OF SOURCES TO FIND

At least 5 sources must be found in the Library subscriiption databases (such as EBSCO, ProQuest, LexisNexis Academic, NewsBank, Opposing Viewpoints, CQ Researcher, etc.). NOTE: The outside source you found for previous projects could be one of these database sources, if it fits your topic/research question.

The 6th source may be an additional database source or an additional source of another type, such as a reputable open Web source, video, podcast, personal interview, etc. It may also be a print source, such as a book or magazine.
