Describe and explain the significance of the following three technologies/formats to the act of making music popular: 1) the radio; 2) television; 3) downloadable music and portables (e.g. streaming platforms such as Spotify, YouTube Music, Tidal, Amazon; and the iPod, iPad, mp3 player). For each format, use course materials/readings or any other research materials to describe each technology/format in relation to one band or artist we have studied in the course (that is, one artist for radio, one for TV, one for downloadable music and portables – 3 artists, one for each format)), and describe how their popularity is influenced and/or augmented by these technologies.
QUESTION 2:
Pretend you are a music journalist. Begin by listening to/watching the following four songs:
– The Ramones: “Blitzkrieg Bop”
– Donna Summer: “I Feel Love”
– Nirvana: “Come As You Are”
– Wu Tang Clan: “Triumph (ft. Cappadonna)”
Briefly describe how music and musicians can establish new stylistic and/or aesthetic trajectories in the popular music industries. Then, write a short question and answer interview between yourself and two of these four bands/artists. You are to creatively come up with the questions and answers, present them in an interview format, and ensure that the response comments on the nature of music and new stylistic/aesthetic trajectories. You have freedom to determine what you will discuss within this larger theme, so please be creative with this one. For each artist interview, incorporate at least one concept we have discussed in course materials which specifically relates to the artist themselves. You might choose one question per artist, with lengthy answers, or a few short questions for each, with shorter answers.
