Chapter 16 discusses some of the challenges in nursing and is a call to action. Under The Challenge: Care of the Profession is a subsection titled Promoting Civility. In the recent past nursing has had a reputation of “eating their own”. This was baffling to me as a new graduate nurse 24 years ago. How can a group of caregivers be so hard on each other? Since then there has been a push to increases civility, decrease bullying and end lateral violence in nursing. This has been mostly done with education and modeling behaviors. For the most part this has worked, but we must continue to be vigilant with educating the next generation of nurses. Critical Thinking assignment this week is to research and find a journal article on either civility, bullying or lateral violence in nursing.
