Read the short story, “The Second Bakery Attack” by Haruki Murakami (click here to download). Then, applying literary Structuralism, write a short analytical essay with “The Second Bakery Attack” as your main topic. You may use New Criticism in addition to Structuralism. You may also use outside texts (short stories, novels, TV shows, movies) to help define your source text. (if the link doesn’t work, google the title of the story)
If you need help, try choosing one or more of the approaches listed below
Define your text (2nd Bakery Attack) through Structuralism. In other words, how is the text defined by forces outside of itself? Think of the Sitcom Video, if you were to define this story like that, what is the “hidden formula”?
Show how your text is part of a genre, group, or larger category (example: Define “Saw” as a horror film)*Extra points if you define your text unexpectedly, like trying to establish a Romantic Comedy as a Thriller*
Or highlight systems, assumptions, or criticisms that can result from Structuralism as a lens (Murakami is Japanese and the story has been translated so there are cultural and language possibilities)
