You are a brand-new social worker, and your first job is at a victim’s assistance program. You
did your field placement here and they thought so much of you that they decided to hire you after graduation. You are thrilled as this is the type of work you have always wanted to do. In your personal life you consider yourself to be social and have many friends. You do find that finding dates is hard for you and use various social media apps for dating.
Four months into your job you go on a date with somebody you found on social media. The date was ok, and you did not plan to see this person again. A week later you are in the office and a new client has been assigned to you. You go out to meet the person and you realize it is the person you had a date with. The person uses a different name on the app, so you did not make the connection when you saw the client’s name. You turn around quickly and hope the client does not see you. You sit down to think about your options, but you know you have to act
quickly. Do you ask a co-worker who is free to take the case for you? Do you tell your
supervisor about the conflict? Do you have to disclose why you cannot help this client? Do you
just meet with the client and not tell anybody what is going on?
Make sure you explain how you reached your conclusions including ethical decision-making
processes from the Reamer text. What part of the Code of Ethics applies to your decision
making? Are there any state laws that you have to consider?
Describe the bio/psych/social/cultural/spiritual assessment factors of this case.
Intervention:
