Write an essay of 6-8 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, MLA style. This is an analytical research essay, which means you must construct an argument about one or two of the texts from our course. Your essay must use at least TWO scholarly sources. Here are some examples, meant as a jumping-off point feel free to come up with your own topic, but please have it approved by me:
1. Using a text that is not on our reading list but is connected to one in some way, discuss the connections between it and one of our main texts; you could examine the impact of one novel on another, for example, or look at the contrasting views of the same subject.
2. In some literary works, a minor character such as one who briefly appears or does not appear at all can play a significant role in shaping the overall story. Choose one of the texts we have studied and discuss the importance of such a character. You may wish to examine how this character reveals information about the storys protagonist or how they propel the plot forward.
3. Examine the role of the natural environment in the works of one or two authors we have studied. What role does it play in the lives of the characters? Are the authors responding in similar or different ways? Are they coping in an alien land, or romanticizing reality, etc.?
4. Throughout our course, we have discussed the role and characterization of the narrator. Choosing two of the texts we studied, explore the narration are they unreliable? How does it affect the text? How does the narrator claim authority? How does the narrator shift our perceptions?
5. Write an essay of your choice; please have the topic approved by me.
