As you transition from the role of student nurse to a newly licensed nurse, it is important to craft and define your personal nursing philosophy. This is a very important step in identifying how you perceive your role, your responsibilities and how you plan on delivering patient care.
This discovery or clarification is especially crucial in today’s times with the rapidly evolving profession of nursing and health care system. Your decisions as a registered nurse will be influenced by your individual moral values, beliefs, and ethical considerations and the legal system. Along the way, it will also be influenced by the patients you care for, the colleagues and mentors you work with and more. The philosophy offers the chance to explore and describe your core belief system about nursing and its significance to you.
· Introduction and Personal Philosophy – What is your philosophy or belief about the nursing profession and delivery of care? What theories, beliefs, values, and assumptions shape your perspective of the nursing paradigm? Do you relate to a specific theory or theorist (i.e in nursing, psychology, sociology, etc). Provide an explanation of at least one theory and describe how it influences your perspective and philosophy. This theory must be properly cited and referenced.
· Changes – Compared to when you first entered the Nursing Program, has your philosophy changed, deepened and/or been modified through education and the exposure to real patients with real needs in the clinical setting through your past few semesters of nursing school? Have you gained a certain wisdom or insight as a senior nursing student that you did not have prior to becoming a nursing student? Describe at least two changes and factors influencing the changes. Discuss any ideas or concepts you learned throughout the program that might have influenced the changes.
· Strengths – Do you believe your patients and their families were satisfied or pleased with the care you delivered? What do you think made your approach or care unique? Name at least two essential characteristics that you possess that are important in the nursing profession. Provide rationales for your selection as to why they are important in the field of nursing.
· Areas for Development – What are some aspects you would like to work on? Describe at least two areas in need of development and explain how you plan on developing these areas. Provide rationales and supporting evidence as needed.
· Goals – What field(s) of nursing and populations would you like to work with? Where do you see yourself in two years and in five years in nursing? What do you hope to gain from the nursing profession? What do you think will be your contribution to nursing?
· Conclusion – Summation of the various components of the paper
