In order to expand your tastes and help you learn about new types of music, you must attend one concert from each of the following styles/genres:

A symphony, concert band, or wind ensemble concert: The symphony, concert band, and wind ensemble concerts are listed as such on the Events Calendar. These are concerts that involve a large group of musicians all playing together. Note: the String Project Concert may not be used for a Concert Report, as no One Card swiping will be available.

A chamber concert or solo recital: A chamber music concert will involve a small number of musicians playing together (usually 3–10) such as a string quartet or percussion ensemble. Solo recitals are generally one person playing alone or with an accompanist. A student or faculty solo recital will be titled as such on the Events Calendar. This involves one person playing an instrument or singing. (Many jazz concerts and world music concerts are small ensembles or solo recitals so consider these as well). Chamber music concerts have different titles and can be difficult to identify. Be sure to email the instructor if you need help finding one of these.

A vocal concert: This can be a choir concert, vocal recital, or an opera. A choir concert, opera, or vocal recital will be titled as such on the Events Calendar. These all involve singing.

Writing your Concert Reports: Using the notes you took during the concert, write a report on the concert. If you need help with ideas of what to write about, you may consider the questions below. There is no set format for this assignment. Your writing should reflect what you found interesting and noteworthy about the concert. Write a report of 400–500 words for each concert you attend, double-spaced in 12-point font. Your concert reports will be graded all together at the end of the semester.

Your concert report should be about what you find most interesting from the concert and should incorporate music concepts and vocabulary that you have learned in the course.

Possible questions to address in your concert reports:

1. What were you able to discern about the rhythm, tempo, texture, meter, melody, harmony, instrumentation and timbre of the music? Can you describe the form of the music? Which instruments were prominent? Can you hear a musical idea being repeated, developed, or passed around between the performers?

2. How did this style of music fit with the music you are most comfortable listening to?

3. How did the information from this course affect the way you understood or appreciated this music?

4. How did your expectations of the style, genre, ensemble, or composer affect how you experienced the music? Were you surprised by how it sounded? Did you already have a familiarity with this kind of music?

5. How did the “non-musical” aspects of the performance affect your experience? Were you interested by the physical expressions of the performer(s)? Did you find the behavior of the audience striking in any way? What social conventions did you experience during the performance, and how did they impact your overall response to the concert?

6. Did you enjoy the music? Will you seek out more music of this kind? Why or why not?
